I honestly enjoyed the puzzles overall but it was weird to have these random spikes in complexity. Other puzzles, like the pipe puzzles, sometimes generate with no discernible way to connect the pipes, so I had to reload to reset them. This puzzle I solved by accident at the exact moment I could’ve sworn I failed. The second stage of the puzzle got even more crazy, as it seemed to want me to combine the antidote and toxin in order to succeed.

SAW XBOX 360 TRIAL

I soon realized that Jigsaw hadn’t told me whether I was supposed to be feeding myself the toxin as much as I could without dying while trying to save the other person with the antidote, so it become trial and error. You feed antidote or toxin from one side of the machine and it falls Rube Goldberg style into a receptacle that affects you or the other captive so you have to balance out who gets what and figure out which way the machine will funnel whichever substance you’re feeding into it. You and another captive are hooked up to a machine that stabs you with needles filled with either antidote or toxin. The first major “boss” puzzle threw me for a loop though and Jigsaw’s explanation didn’t help nor did the countless walkthroughs I perused to get an idea of what the puzzle’s “rules” were. The lack of score in many areas was okay with me in terms of tension but there’s certainly less music here than many other games. Parts of the Saw film score will play during the menu which is cool but very often the in-game music is just a throbbing drum track during tense sections that fades into silence when puzzle solving. Unfortunately, sound mixing is awful for Tapp who can often barely be heard even if he’s the only sound. He over narrates a bit, having to introduce nearly every set piece and overexplain what to do, but still, it’s hard not enjoy his raspy delivery and weird pronunciations. While the side characters are fairly unremarkable, Tobin Bell lends his voice to Jigsaw yet again, and his work here is just as much good fun as always. You definitely aren’t doing this for them. They’re all unhappy about who you were to them in real life before or are frustrated you broke them out because they were trying to get on Jigsaw’s good side by beating his trap. The people you rescue are either unique female characters or basically bald white guy clones with bad attitudes. Graphically some character models look pretty poor but I like the character in Tapp’s face, though he struggles to emote past this default grimace. These games came out within a couple months of each other so there’s no plagiarism here, but all that to say, if you liked one visually, odds are you’ll like the other. Also TVs, lot of TVs, much like Joker employs in the Batman games. I noticed that SAW often has favorable comparisons to Bioshock and Batman: Arkham Asylum, with a lot of contrast between fluorescent greens and washed out yellow lighting. You’ll have to use your flashlight or lighter muchly oftentimes or you won’t be able to see bugger all.įortunately, the game generally looks fine and later areas get a lot more creative. Other nitpicks are slow loading textures and the game’s sometimes oppressive darkness, like Doom 3 meme levels of darkness. You’ll see many a tile floor bathroom and the same set dressings like desks, TVs, and trash, which makes the game look consistent but also indistinct from one area to the next. I didn’t notice this quality until another couple reviewers brought it to my attention but once you do see it, it can become a little distracting. This place feels dangerous and unwelcoming and the only thing that detracts from that dread is the subtle repetition of assets.

The environments are often gated off by chain link fences or reinforced doors, and blood and barbed wire are strewn about. Having just watched all seven Saw films, I can confirm the game definitely captures its filthy grindhouse aesthetic.
